SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Exclusive: Emily Hampshire Interview - Part two

Emily HampshireTonight on Syfy's newest episode of 12 Monkeys, quite a lot happened with the character of Jennifer Goines, played by Emily Hampshire. Last month when I talked one on one with the actress, we discussed two of tonight's important scenes.

First, when talking about the scene that was most most difficult for her to play this season, she talked about filming at the summer house.

"It was definitely when we went to the summer house. I'm not usually 'actorly' like this, but I feel like Jennifer's a different part for me, and I feel like I connect with her so deeply, that it does affect me.

"And I remember just going into the summer house, and at least for me, as an actor, my preparation is usually just making everything I talk about real, and experiencing it, not for real, but in an imaginative way. Like when you have dreams, you really feel like you've gone through [something], but it's all imagination.

Emily Hampshire"And so the work I had done to prepare for that episode was definitely going back through Jennifer's childhood stuff and imagining those circumstances.

"I was actually surprised how impacted I was when I just walked in that house and then walked into her room and saw all those things. I actually had moments of realization in the playing of it, because I remember when we were doing the scene, Cassie (Amanda Schull) and I, and talking about how my mother drowned me. And before I actually played the scene, just in general, as most people would, [I thought about how], if you mother tries to drown you, you are mad at her in some way, and you don't like love her that much. But then, what I found in just doing the scene, I was like, 'Oh my God, I don't blame her,' because when I went through that room looking at those pictures that I drew - imagine if you were a kid drawing these terrifying pictures of the Witness and all these things, and your mother's already crazy, and to see that, how terrifying that would be for my mother. And I think it was a real growing up process for Jennifer in that scene. Like when you go through your old childhood home, it's that moment when you realize your parents are people, which is so traumatizing, [laughs] because you're like, 'Oh, they had feelings too,' and 'things were hard for them too.' And I think that's what Jennifer realizes at that point when she says, "You know, I don't blame her; she thought I was going to end the world, and she was right." So in a way I realized my mom, by trying to kill me, her intentions were good.

"But to answer your question though, that whole day was definitely the hardest for me. That was I guess just the hardest, because I was really affected. I think the people who made the house up really did a good job, like the painters and everything.

"And Cassie, I love working with Amanda, and I feel like she makes me better; it's always like I have to be present, and when I work with Amanda, I feel like I'm just really there, so there's no acting required, which makes things easier."

Emily HampshireJennifer confronts her real mother's ghost in the episode, but she also attacks the woman she has seen at times as a mother, Olivia (Alisen Down).

"[laughs] Season two is about mothers, a lot of it, whereas season one was about the relationship with fathers and sons. And I think, to try to kill off this mother, in her mind at least, who has been not a good mother, is really empowering to Jennifer. And also to do it to save her friend, to be a good friend to Cassie, you know, that becomes a huge thing.

"I think she will never find a more loyal friend than Jennifer. If you care about her, she will go to the end of the earth for you. And I think that she's ultimately not just doing it for herself.

"It was also though on the day very hard to do, because Alisen Down was pregnant [laughs] and nobody wanted to do anything! - Like, I didn’t want to stab her in the stomach! It was really difficult. [laughs]"
