Tonight Syfy aired the penultimate episode of season one of Wynonna Earp. The television series, based on the comic of the same name, follows Wyatt Earp's heir, Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) as she kills Revenants and sends them back to Hell with her demon-killing gun Peacemaker. She is joined by her boss at Black Badge Division, Agent Xavier Dolls, played by Shamier Anderson, her sister Waverly (Dominque Provost-Chalkley), and Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon).

In tonight's episode, not only did it end with the shocking twist of the long thought dead Earp sister Willa (Natalie Krill) walking away willingly with Revenant Bobo Del Rey (Michael Eklund) while most of the town was about to die from poison, but also on the more personal front, Wynonna kissed Dolls.

Last week Anderson talked to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview about what's next for Dolls, what secrets he's been keeping, and the steamy kiss between him and Wynonna.

SCIFI VISION: How did you first become involved in the show?

SHAMIER ANDERSON: Honestly, I just auditioned for it. My agent sent me a script. She said, "Hey, you should check this show out." I'm like, "All right, cool, let me take a peek at it," and I took a peek at it.

I actually declined, believe it or not. I said no. I mean, it wasn't because of the content; I just wasn't in the right headspace at the time to do another project. But I'm like, "I'll give it a shot."

So I gave it a shot, and I read it, and Emily [Andras] called, and the showrunner said, "I really like what Shamier did with Dolls; we want to bring him in and meet him."

So I met Emily in Toronto, and after that, I got another call saying, "We really love Shamier, and we want to send him to Los Angeles and meet the rest of the team."

So I went down, and believe it or not, I was in the room with - it was myself, Tim Rozon, Melanie Scrofano, and another person I will not name, you will probably recognize her, but we were all there, and we just kind of said good luck to everybody, and hopefully we get this, and if we do, we'll be friends forever. And then long story short, we're here today.

Did you read any of the comics the show is based on, either before taking on the role or after?

Actually, I had no idea what Wynonna Earp was about before reading the script. After I got on the show, I met Beau Smith, and of course, I own like a thousand copies now.

Was there anyone who inspired you or affected how you portrayed Dolls?

Honestly I love everything that Dolls comes with, from the action, to the intellect, to the confidence, down to all the cool tactical things he gets to do, from the fighting to the guns and weapons. And I just think, as stoic as he can be, he's so complex, and there're so many layers, and it's been such a thrill to play him, physically as well. You know, I have to really be in the gym almost every day just to keep up with what the writers have in store for me, from the fighting, to the working out scenes, and everything. Across the board I was happy.

Are there parts of yourself you brought to the role? How did you connect with him?

The way I connected with the character Dolls, is one thing I feel we really have hand in hand is the passion. You know, I have passion about what I do in real life, and I know dolls is passionate about his job in the Black Badge Division and what it stands for, and what his missions and goals are within the BVD. So that's something that I go hand in hand with Dolls, our passion for what we do.

We know from early on that Dolls is injecting himself with something, is there anything you can tease about with that?

I'll give you this; you're the first one to hear this. If he doesn't take what he takes to calm himself down, to maintain the "beast inside of him," if he doesn't take those antidotes that you see, he becomes something very, very strong. Just think the Hulk, just to give you a little idea.

Is there a particular reason why his eyes are a different color than the Revenants? Is there anything you can say about that?

Just follow the line of what he could become essentially, and every time you see that color change, it's just like a little bit of that thing that's inside of him is slowly sneaking out. So when you see him in the season finale, you'll kind of see him become what he's supposed to become if he doesn't take that antidote.

Can you talk about working with those special effects? I'm guessing by what Michael Ecklund (Bobo) said when I interviewed him, you may not have even known ahead what it was going to look like. Can you talk about those special effects and maybe some others that you've been a part of?

My character not so much, but when Wynonna Earp - Melanie Scrofano, is executing a Revenant on set, it's funny, because we obviously don't see them getting sucked into the ground while we're filming. So all the actors on set have to mime and pretend that they're going through the ground.

And during the wrap party they showed a compilation - I think it's online somewhere, but all the guest stars who were Revenants, a just kind of behind the scenes look at what they did. And the robotic angular movement is really fun without music and editing; it looks kind of hilarious. It's like they're having a seizure almost; it's so funny. The commitment actors have to have when doing silly things like that - but it all paid off in the final result.

Did you know though what his eyes were going to look like?

Honestly when we saw the episode and it first happened, that was my first time seeing it. I was like, "Wow, cool."

But even during the process, they were still figuring out how Revenants were going to get sucked in, what color eyes [they would have]. It was definitely a work in progress; I think even up to the last days of filming they didn't really know what it was going to look like is my understanding.

Being in the Black Badge Division, it seems likely that there are probably still things that Dolls knows that he hasn't shared with Wynonna yet. Is that accurate, and is there more that we're going to find out? Is there anything you can say about that? I know he can't tell her everything.

100%. It's like Mr. Miyagi and the student; there's always more to be learned, and there're definitely a whole bunch of secrets and classified documents that Wynonna has no idea about that Dolls slowly reveals. He's definitely always ten steps ahead of Wynonna. And even when Wynonna thinks she's quick, Dolls is quicker.

In tonight's episode, Peacemaker becomes sort of jammed for Wynonna, and she thinks Willa is the true heir and that she's not going to be able to do her job anymore. Dolls comforts her, saying that he still needs her, things like that. Now I don't think it would happen, considering the show is named Wynonna Earp and not Willa Earp, but if that did actually happen, how would they be able to continue if she couldn't kill Revenants? What do you think is running through his mind when he says that? Is it just because he cares about her and wants her to stay, or does he mean it?

I think it's a bit of both. I think he doesn't want to lose her, but at the same time, I really feel Dolls believes that there's something internal with Wynonna. It's not about the gun; it's not about her having Peacemaker.

I think definitely it goes along side with having to execute demons, but I think he lets her know what's happened thus far is because of who she is as a person, what's happening inside, even though Willa is kind of this wild card in this whole situation. He tells her that to kind of keep her on track, and obviously because Dolls being Dolls, he knows something's going on. Something's off, and he's not just going to come to the conclusion that 'Hey, that's it; Wynonna's out of the picture.' He's still figuring that out in his head. I think he has to keep Wynonna as levelheaded as possible in that research without coming to any quick conclusions.

In tonight's episode, Wynonna finally kisses Dolls. Can you talk about that scene, both filming it, and then just in general with the characters?

Throughout the table read, when we read in the script that Dolls and Wynonna kiss, obviously everyone's reaction at the table was like "Oh my gosh it actually happens!" and we're like, "Yes, it's going to happen."

So obviously at this point, Mel's probably kissed every guy in the show, and I'm the only guy she hasn't kissed. So, you know, we're on set getting ready for it, and honestly it was like any other day. There was no big buildup or anything like that. We did the scene the first time, and it was electric; the second time it was electric. We did it about three or four times, and it was electric. You know, it was great; it was just another scene that we had to do.

And as for story point, I think it definitely wasn't forced, where you're like, 'Okay, we have to have this moment now.' It felt very organic, and it felt like it needed to happen at that time, but we'll see what the world thinks when they see Dolls and Wynonna actually having their first kiss. I think that takes their relationship in a whole other lane.

By the way, I just wanted to say, Mel is a great kisser, let's just say that.

Of course, though, when he finally kisses her, is when Doc walks in, which I'm guessing will be awkward later. They've hinted at the whole love triangle throughout the season. So in your opinion, why should she choose Dolls over Doc?

That's a tough question. Well, I'm biased. I would say she should choose Dolls, because Doll's is a bad ass, you know what I mean? [laughs] And every girl needs a rough guy, you know? I don't know.

Honestly, that's up to the fans to decide; I can't answer something like that. I can't choose that, but if I have to say something, I would say that there're so many different reasons why she should choose Dolls; there're so many different reasons why she should choose Doc. My main thing is, Doc's an old man. He could probably be her father three times over, you know what I mean? [laughs] He's timeless. But that's definitely the fans' choice. We have this whole thing going on on social media, Team Dolls or Team Doc, and I think at the end, we'll see what the world has to say, or what team they're going to choose. But I choose Team Dolls, just saying.

Everyone on the show has great lines; do you have a favorite?

It would have to be when Melanie as Wynonna says something along the lines of "Something can be very small," and then Dolls chimes in going, "It's not that small," and then walks away. [laughs]

I'll tell you this, as an actor, Mel has so many quick little things that she does. I say Mel, because a lot of that stuff is Melanie Scrofano just throwing in her quick one-liners, and half the stuff probably doesn't even make it to air, because it's so explicit, because Melanie's jokes can get to that level. But we've got so many great lines; I can't even pick one. I mean, there're hundreds of GIFs and pictures and stuff in the social media world of all the one-liners that we have. So I think that small line is probably mine for sure.

You touched upon it earlier about going to the gym, but can you talk a bit more about the physicality of the roll - the fight scenes and that kind of thing. You've had some big ones.

Yeah. Pretty much that fight scene between Tim and I. First of all, Tim is one badass mother beep, okay, just putting that out there, all right? That man worked so hard, and he really really commits, and he can take a beating. Because I put a beating on that boy. [laughs]

And aside from that, the rehearsals with the incredible stunt coordinator, Steve [McMichael] were so collaborative with implementing different [fighting styles] for me, because I actually do martial arts, and so he was able to incorporate some of my style into his choreography, which made it a lot more fluid and more realistic for me. And we have such an amazing crew of background performers that really drove the energy and helped build that climatic flavor, I should say. And so it was a great process.

As for the working out, I have to be in the gym, like I said, every single day. Leading up to that point actually on the side, rightbefore and in between takes, I would have dumbbells, and Tim and I would pump iron just to get that, you know, pump on before we did the scene. It was a lot of work. I actually had to see a physiotherapist after that.

Did you get a lot of weapons training at the beginning?

Yeah, we went to the range; we got to shoot all the guns. I got to shoot Peacemaker, shotguns, rifles, machine guns, everything. And we did a bunch of tactical training, how to use guns properly. We did a little bit of stunt driving just to know how to drive big trucks and drive cars pretty quickly, and then we also had to do a bit of fighting training with Steve who just kind of lets you get the styles of martial arts and understanding of set choreography versus real fighting techniques and fusing the two, and I think we had a whole month of preproduction before we actually went to camera, which was really exciting.

This question I can't take credit for; it's a fan question from Twitter, but a great one. How did Dolls get away from the wolf?

[laughs] Honestly I don't even know how he got away. [laughs] That's a great question. That's a small detail point, and I can't even - honestly, I don't know. It's one of those things where he saw Peacemaker, and you looked back and he was gone. He found some sort of way, maybe it will get revealed later on, who knows. But that was such a big moment when I read the script. I'm like, "Damn, Dolls is fast."

Was there anything in particular that was difficult about filming, or a specific scene that was difficult?

Honestly the most difficult scenes for me, I would have to say were when I was outside filming a lot shirtless. Those were like the toughest scenes, because I had to physically prep myself to look like that on screen. And trust me, I like my hamburgers, and I like my pizza. So for me, it was so difficult for me to just maintain that physique, eating right and eliminating all that junk food. But now I'm in the off season, and I'm currently eating a burger. So don't judge me.

Have you heard anything by chance yet about renewal?

I have no idea, to be honest with you. I don't really know when or what's going on. I did get an email two days ago, and I can share this, that Emily is currently in the writing room. Who knows what that means. It could be for our show or for another show, but we have no idea. She just said writing room. So I can't help you out there.

Can you describe Dolls in three words?

I would have to say strong, complex, and badass motherfucker.

Do you have any other projects coming up aside from Wynonna Earp?

I'm actually going to be costarring in a new series on FOX called Shots Fired, and that's going to be airing sometime in 2017. It's starring Helen Hunt, Richard Dreyfuss, and Will Patton. I'm currently shooting that as we speak in North Carolina, and that's going to be on FOX. And it's completely different from Dolls. I actually play Maceo Terry, who's a football player who plays for the Panthers, and I drive Lamborghinis and Ferraris. He spends a lot of money; he's definitely opposite of Dolls, but I have that new series coming out with that star-studded cast. A great drama, it's an event series, meaning it's a short ten hour series, ten episodes only, one and done, and it should be coming out in 2017. That's my current project I'm working on right now.
